Schonbrunn Palace
A place of eternal charm, where history and culture come together in perfect harmony. Walking through its pathways feels like diving into an elegant scene, among sumptuous palaces, historic cafés, and squares that narrate years of beauty and art. However, Vienna is primarily the City of Music. From the luxury of the Habsburg court to contemporary music, Austria’s capital has seen the birth and hosted the most famous figures in history, including Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Strauss, and Haydn. These musical giants worked in Vienna, leaving an indelible mark that has endured to this day in concert halls, streets, and avenues. Here are some of the main attractions, among the most interesting to see.
Schönbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the Habsburgs and a jewel of Viennese Baroque architecture, is one of the most visited places in Europe. It possesses an astounding wealth of historical and cultural significance, reflected not only in the palace’s interiors but also in the expansive gardens and numerous surrounding attractions. Here’s what deserves to be visited during the guided tour of this magnificent complex.
Imperial Apartments of Franz Joseph and Sissi
The tour inside the palace includes 22 rooms, among which stand out the private apartments of Emperor Franz Joseph and his consort, Princess Sissi, also known as Empress Elisabeth. Franz Joseph’s rooms are simple and functional, reflecting the emperor’s austere lifestyle, while Sissi’s rooms are decorated with elegance and refinement, providing an intimate glimpse into the private life of the renowned sovereign.
Great Gallery and State Rooms
The Great Gallery is one of the most captivating spaces, measuring 40 meters in length, adorned with gilded stuccoes and frescoes that animate the ceiling. This was once the venue for imperial banquets and balls. Following this, you can admire the Million Room, clad in Brazilian rosewood with Indian miniatures, and the Chinese Room, decorated with Oriental porcelain, symbolizing the exotic taste of the time.
Schönbrunn Gardens
The gardens extend over 160 hectares, following the French Baroque style. Mythological statues, fountains, sculpted hedges, and colorful geometric flowerbeds frame the central building. Everything appears as a perfect choreography for relaxing strolls or postcard-worthy photographs.
Gloriette
The Gloriette is located atop a hill in the gardens; it is a monumental neoclassical structure created in 1775. Originally serving as an imperial dining room and viewpoint, it now houses a café with an unparalleled view of Vienna and the park.
Schönbrunn Zoo
We are talking about the oldest zoo in the world, founded in 1752. Today, it is a modern zoological park that hosts species from all continents. From giant pandas to elephants, polar bears to tropical birds, it is a must-see destination for both adults and children.
Imperial Carriage Museum
Inside the former stables, you will find the Imperial Carriage Museum, where you can admire luxurious vehicles, ceremonial carriages, and even the opulent coronation carriage and Sissi’s funeral carriage. Among the most famous pieces are the original garments of the imperial court.
Maze and Garden of the Crown Prince
The maze has been faithfully reconstructed according to historical designs, offering a playful experience for everyone. Next to it is the Garden of the Crown Prince, featuring well-maintained hedges, plant sculptures, and a relaxing setting.
Palm House (Palmenhaus)
Constructed in 1882, the Palm House is a monumental iron and glass greenhouse. It houses exotic plants of all kinds, including giant palms, tropical ferns, and botanical rarities from equatorial climates.
Orangery
The Schönbrunn Orangery was used to protect citrus plants during the winter. Today, it hosts concerts and events while still retaining the opulent atmosphere of the Habsburg imperial court.
Desert House (Wüstenhaus)
Adjacent to the Palm House is the Desert House, a themed greenhouse that replicates arid ecosystems. It houses cacti, succulent plants, and typical desert animals such as snakes, insects, and lizards.
